General Questions

Do I have to use ShowerTan in a shower?

No, but most people prefer the shower since it's private and convenient. ShowerTan could also be used in a garage, basement, or even outdoors when not too windy.

Will it stain my bathroom walls or shower?

No. The STC Solution is clear and won't stain. The overspray residue is clear and can be rinsed with water immediately after use, or during your next shower.

How long will it take to use?

The misting spray takes about 20 seconds and the whole process, which includes set up and clean up, takes only about 5 minutes. The tan will slowly appear on your skin in 8 to 12 hours.

How long will the tan last?

The ShowerTan tan on most people fades within 5 to 7 days as skin sheds gradually. The duration and quality of the tan may be increased by exfoliating just before use and moisturizing everyday afterward.

How frequently can I use it?

ShowerTan may be used once or twice a week if you wish maintain a continuous tan, or on occasion as needed. Be sure to wait at least 24 hours between each session.

What tanning solutions come with ShowerTan?

ShowerTan's STC Solution is a clear Aloe Vera based tanning solution which contains 8.75% DHA as the active tanning ingredient. It is fragrance-free and doesn't contain alcohol as some tanning solutions do, which may dry your skin. The STB Solution is just like the STC Solution except that it includes a light bronzer, so it's visible when applied. The starter kit includes a pump spray bottle of the STB Solution, used for touching up in between full body sprays, or applied as a tan extender.

What is DHA? How does it work?

DHA stands for dihydroxyacetone, a sugar compound. It's an FDA approved cosmetic ingredient which has been used in UV-free tanning systems for decades. It reacts with the skin's outermost layers to produce a golden tan color. It lasts until the darkened skin cell layers naturally shed.

How can I get replacement cartridges and tanning solutions?

These can be purchased separately in bulk or 4-pack refills.

Safety, Health, and Other Concerns

Will I be protected from the sun by a sunless tan?

No. ShowerTan tanning solutions don't contain a sunscreen, and a UV-free tan doesn't provide any type of protection from the sun. You should wear a sunscreen like normal when under the sun to protect against its harmful UV rays.

Do I have to hold my breath?

We recommend that you hold your breath while misting, but the solution is non-toxic. People with respiratory concerns such as asthma should consult with a doctor before using ShowerTan.

Is ventilation required?

Ventilation isn't required but bathroom vent fans may be used if you have them. Most of the mist spray will settle on your body while the overspray will settle on the floor and shower walls.

Is DHA Safe?

Yes, DHA is a cosmetic ingredient, FDA approved since the 1970's. It has been used with success for decades in sunless tanning products. Consult a physician before using ShowerTan if you're pregnant, or have other conditions like asthma or skin conditions that may be affected by using ShowerTan.

Will the solution stain my hair?

ShowerTan's STC Solution doesn't contain anything that will damage or stain your hair. Still, we recommend a showercap to keep the solution off your hair since it can get a bit sticky.

Can it turn skin streaky or orange?

When sunless tanning lotions were first introduced, they were infamous for streaky and orangey results when applied unevenly or excessively. Most of these problems have disappeared with current DHA mixtures, and more advanced application methods. This is especially true with ShowerTan since it always coats your entire body evenly with the proper amount of solution.

Is the solution  smelly or sticky?

As with any other tanning solution that contains DHA, your skin will feel a bit tacky after application, but this disappears after a few hours. Some folks also notice a mild starchy smell associated with DHA. This usually goes unnoticed by others and also disappears soon.

Can ShowerTan be used with my own tanning solution?

Yes, the unit can be used with any spray-on tanning solution. However, ShowerTan's STC formulation was specifically engineered and tested extensively to be superior in several ways. The consistency of the solution is slightly different than most spray-on solutions and complements ShowerTan's misting system. It is also affordably priced. Note that tanning cartridges are still necessary when using the system with other solutions. You can buy them separately in the Related Gadgets section below.

Can I spray my face?

Though the misting nozzles could be directed away from your face, ShowerTan was meant to tan your whole body, including your face. The FDA has so far approved DHA only for external use. That means you should not expose mucous membranes like eyes, nasal passages, or lips, and you should not inhale or ingest. At this time, there's no scientific data which suggests any harm caused by exposure to mucous membranes, inhalation or ingestion. Still, we recommended that you close your eyes and mouth, and hold your breath during the 20 second mist spray process. It's up to you if you want to take any additional protective measures such as nose filters (offered in the Related Gadgets section below), lip balm, or eye goggles.

What about variations in skin type?

The ShowerTan home tanning system works with all skin tones and types. However, just like any other tanning method, results vary according to skin type. ShowerTan's STC Solution is formulated with 8.75% DHA, which generally provides a medium tan with one application on light or medium skin tones. People with very light skin might achieve better results by using water to dilute the solution to a ratio of between 4 parts to 1 and 2 parts to 1. Those with darker skin tones may need DHA booster drops that strengthen the solution, or use ShowerTan a bit more frequently in order to achieve the desired results.

Are the tanning cartridges safe?

They are safe, as long as they are handled properly. ShowerTan's tanning cartridges come in high-pressure CO² cartridges like those used in seltzer bottles and airguns. Tanning cartridges must be kept at room temperature, must not be punctured or heated, and must be kept out of children's reach.

How do I clean and maintain my ShowerTan unit?

After every use, you should clean the ShowerTan unit internally and externally. External cleaning is simply done by rinsing the unit with water. Internal cleaning is done by spraying through with water instead of solution. The starter and refill kits come with extra cartridges for cleaning after each use.

Does ShowerTan come with a warranty?

All new ShowerTan units include a limited 1 year manufacturer's warranty with the following terms: If the unit malfunctions because of a manufacturing defect within 1 year of purchase, just ship to ShowerTan and they will replace or repair it for free. How can I prepare before using ShowerTan?

The ShowerTan starter kit comes with a practice tanning cartridge that you can use for a test run with water instead of tanning solution. This is very helpful for new users since it gives you a good idea of how the unit sprays the mist and how long the process lasts. We recommend that you exfoliate thoroughly before using ShowerTan so that the DHA reacts with "fresh" skin. This will also maximize the time your tan stays on your skin.

Your skin should be perfectly dry and clean, without make-up, before using ShowerTan. Always take caution when handling the tanning solution to avoid unwanted contact with skin, which may cause unwanted darkening, especially on the hands. Wash any area of unintentional contact thoroughly within a few minutes after the contact.

Is there anything I should avoid before and after using ShowerTan?

After showertanning, avoid swimming, sweating, showering, and wearing tight fitting clothes for 8 to 12 hours if possible, so that the tanning process can proceed without interference.

What should I be wearing during and after my ShowerTan sessions?

We recommend that you wear the plastic shower cap and booties included in ShowerTan kits. Underwear or bathing suit is up to you. Wear loose clothing afterwards. Even though the solution is clear, DHA may stain silk, nylon, lycra, spandex, wool, and leather, so avoid contact with these materials after spray tanning.

Do you have any tips for hands, feet, elbows, and knees?

Just like any other UV-free tanning system, the feet, fingers, palms and, to a lesser extent, the elbows and knees, can turn extra dark from excessive DHA contact. That is because of the thicker skin in those areas. The bottom of your feet can be protected by wearing booties, but the solution should be blended onto the sides and tops of your feet by blotting with a towel or rubbing in after removing the booties so you don't get a "bootie line".

It helps to stand on a towel while showertanning because the solution may soak through to the bottom of your feet when you stand on a wet puddle of solution, even with the booties on. If your booties are loose around the ankle, you may pinch the excess in the back, twist to tighten the booties, and finally tuck the twist down inside the booties.

You may also use moisturizing lotion as a barrier cream before use and again as a softener/blender after use for any areas with thick skin. A washcloth or damp towel may also be used to wipe any excess solution off these areas after use.

Wash your hands with soap immediately after using ShowerTan but avoid splashing water onto other parts of your body. Or, wear latex gloves.

What is the best way to maintain my spray tan?

Since DHA reacts only with the outermost layers of the skin, it starts to fade as the skin sheds. Moisturizing daily may extend the life of those skin layers as well as your tan. Also, you can use the STB Solution (included with ShowerTan) for touching up between spray tans, or as a tan extender.
