Lorraine Moore was looking for a way to let her three pet cockatiels out of the cage without getting bird poop all over. When she designed the first bird diaper, she began thinking big right away. "It was one of those things where you just kind of get the chills," recalls Lorraine. "I thought, this could really be something." The diaper itself is a small slip of Lycra with some thin elastic straps which go over the bird's wings. The end of cups over the bird's tail, and there's a pouch under the bird which makes sure the mess stays away from the feathers.

A dual-military family living in San Diego, California back then, Lorraine and  Mark, her husband, started perfecting the design which allows flight, cleanliness, and comfort. They teamed up with the talented fabric designer, Cely Giron, to design the "FlightSuit". They were astounded by all the positive response they got from other bird owners and observers. That inspired the Moore's into filing for a patent and produce FlightSuits for selling in retail. Winning over the whole bird-owning community was tough. "The culture was, 'If you like birds, then you like the mess, and that's the way it is,'" says Mark . That's one reason why the couple called their invention the FlightSuit, to minimize its association with diapers, though the name was likewise inspired by the freedom and comfort that military flight suits provide.
